Donald Miller
This past Sunday Donald Miller came and spoke at my church (Flood in San Diego). For those of you who are not familiar with him, he is a bestselling author and has written Blue Like Jazz, Searching for God Knows What, Through Painted Deserts, and more.
His talk was about living a better story and how conflict is essential for any great story and for the best life we could possibly live. How does conflict shape us? Does it make us better or does it make us bitter? He spoke about Joseph and how years of struggle and faithfulness in God utimately lead him to become someone very great. What I have always loved about Joseph’s story is that it has his whole life span, ups and downs. Even when it seems like bad things are continually pilling up for him he still does the best job he can do wherever he is. When he is in prison he could have easily given up but he doesn’t and is eventually able to elevate himself to a position where he is actually running the prison.
There are so many things one can draw out from Joseph’s story and from Don’s talk. I have read almost half of Miller’s new book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years and I am loving it so far. I hope it inspires me to embrace and tackle conflict and challenges knowing that they will ultimately make me a better person and a better child of God.
